Op 3 juli heeft burgemeester Bruls op De Oversteek de plaquette onthuld die in het verleden bij CP Kelko hing.

Uit zijn toespraak het volgende fragment:

Roy Hanna, nu 101 jaar oud, was één van die dappere militairen. Hij is één van de meest onderscheiden parachutisten van de 82e Airborne Division. Roy Hanna heeft mij een paar woorden toegestuurd en gevraagd deze met u te delen.

“The dedication of that plaque brings back many memories, good and bad. I’m still amazed that General Gavin conceived and Colonel Tucker approved this mission. But history concludes that it was a good one and did much to free the city of Nijmegen.

I would very much like to visit you all one more time and see the bridge and the area in general, bus I’m sorry tot say that those traveling days are things in the past and that now falls in the caterory of memories.”

Ook Chloe en Marjorie Gavin, dochters van generaal Gavin, wilen graag dat ik de volgende woorden met u deel.

“On behalf of the entire Gavin family, we send our thanks to Mayor Bruls and the citizens of Nijmegen for the rededication of this plaque which honors the crossing of the Waal River by paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division. We also want to thank the Sunset Marchers who each night honor de paratroopers’ incredible courage on the River Waal.”
