On the famous Waalcrossing on September 20, 1944 there was a Dutch military participant as well. The book “De vergeten commando” (The forgotten commando, book is written in Dutch), which will be published next April, describes this story in detail for the first time. Over 80 years no one overlooked the fact that commando Val Kokhuis was involved in this heroic combat action on the river Waal near Nijmegen. The story is remarkable because it was unknown for such a long time. The participation of Kokhuis in this crossing is officially recognized. It was reported by royal decree in 1951, were by Queen Juliana awarded him with the Bronzen Kruis (Bronze Cross) the second highest military award in the Netherlands.  (more information on internet (in Dutch) www.devergetencommando.nl)
