September 23, 2024 – Sunset March looks back on a successful Market Garden 80
Market Garden 80 (MG80) was the name for the week of remembrance from September 17 to September 22 to commemorate the events of 80 years ago and celebrate 80 years of liberation of Nijmegen.
The Sunset March Foundation was represented and involved in many commemorations and ceremonies in the Airborne Region Nijmegen, from Groesbeek, Overasselt and Grave to Oosterhout.
Especially mentioned are the commemorations at the James Gavin monument in Groesbeek, at the Jonkerbos Military Cemetery and at the Julian Aaron Cook building in Nijmegen-north.
And, of course, the great commemoration led by Mayor Bruls, with the presence of many authorities at the monument on the Oosterhoutsedijk on Sept. 20. The day of the Waalcrossing. Extra cachet gave the presence of Chloe Gavin, daughter of General James Gavin and James Cook, son of Major Julian Cook, and of course the presence of delegations and the choir of the 82 US Airborne Division.
As every year, there was a Sunset March in the evening on the 20th with honorary posts at every lamppost and an elaborate ceremony at the monument. The veteran of the day was Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Randolph Delapena of the 82nd.
Together with the municipality of Nijmegen, a well-attended Sunset March XXL was organized on September 21, where more than 8000 participants walked behind the board and Team31 of the Sunset March and 120 military American soldiers of 82 airborne Division and followed the adjusted route back after the Sunset March. Veteran of the day was Brigadier-General David Pack, deputy commander of the 82nd.
